Long Live The Micro-Niche Brands!
One of the inpirations for starting this site was the growing sense of familiarity we felt with the emerging branding and marketing trends that empower the little guy. The internet is providing small companies with the production and distribution capabilities that were previously impossible, as well as the ability to connect in a meaningful way with their customers through things like targeted ads, weblogs, message boards etc. At the same time, as the influx article suggests, consumers themselves, in this age of "rampant individualism", will seek out the small brands they relate to.
As we have mentioned here before, this kind of stuff is not so foreign to those of us outside of the mainstream; the independent music subcultures have always been at home in the long tail. But seeing the emergence of a powerful model in which a wide range of niche-brands can more effectively reach out to the modern consumer is pretty exciting. The hope we had for a little levelling of the playing field in our corner applies to an infinite number of products or services, and this is only the beginning ;)
